St. Petersburg Museum of History Partners with St. Petersburg High School

The St. Petersburg Museum of History has partnered with St. Petersburg High School to coordinate an Arts & Culture Academy for students interested in possible careers in the arts or museum worlds.

On March 24, 32 students got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum, led by Rui Farias (Executive Director), Nevin Sitler (Historian and Curator) and Jessy Breckenridge (Archives and Collections Manager). Each staff member delved into their specialty within the Museum, including Curation, Preservation, Government Relations, Business Administration and Marketing.

“The St. Petersburg High School Arts and Culture Academy is excited to partner with the City of St. Petersburg’s arts and culture community to create experiences and opportunities for our students that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible to them,” said Lincoln Yates, Assistant Principal of Transportation at SPHS.

Working with the Museum of History, as well as other Museums, galleries and performing arts venues in St. Petersburg, the Arts & Culture Academy gives curriculum focus to students enrolled in art, music and theater, as well as Florida and African American history courses. The academy also opens the doors for internships and volunteer opportunities for the students.

Following their time at the Museum of History, the students visited the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art and the Palladium Theater.

“We’re honored to work with St. Pete High and Pinellas County Schools to create this first of its kind program,” Farias said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore careers in areas that fuel their passion.”
